Dynamical fluctuation effects in glassy colloidal suspensions
نویسنده
چکیده
Fundamental understanding of heterogeneous dynamics in concentrated glassy hard sphere fluids and colloidal suspensions, even at the single particle level, requires major theoretical advances. Recent simulations and confocal microscopy experiments suggest strong nongaussian dynamical fluctuation effects and activated transport emerge well before an apparent kinetic glass transition is reached. New theoretical approaches that can predict the observable signatures of intermittent large amplitude motions and the associated fluctuation phenomena are discussed. Comparisons are made with experiments, computer simulations, and prior theory for average dynamical properties. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Weak correlations between local density and dynamics near the glass transition.
We perform experiments on two different dense colloidal suspensions with confocal microscopy to probe the relationship between local structure and dynamics near the glass transition. We calculate the Voronoi volume for our particles and show that this quantity is not a universal probe of glassy structure for all colloidal suspensions. We correlate the Voronoi volume to displacement and find tha...
متن کاملGlassy dynamics and dynamical heterogeneity in colloids
Concentrated colloidal suspensions are a well-tested model system which has a glass transition. Colloids are suspensions of small solid particles in a liquid, and exhibit glassy behavior when the particle concentration is high; the particles are roughly analogous to individual molecules in a traditional glass. Because the particle size can be large (100 nm 1000 nm), these samples can be studied...
متن کاملInvestigation of the dynamical slowing down process in soft glassy colloidal suspensions: comparisons with supercooled liquids.
The primary and secondary relaxation timescales of aging colloidal suspensions of Laponite are estimated from intensity autocorrelation functions obtained in dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments. The dynamical slowing down of these relaxation processes are compared with observations in fragile supercooled liquids by establishing a one-to-one mapping between the waiting time since filtrati...
متن کاملAging and memory effects in colloidal glasses
– We study the effect of shear on the aging dynamics of a colloidal suspension of synthetic clay particles. We find that a shear of amplitude γ reduces the relaxation time measured just after the cessation of shear by a factor exp(−γ/γc), with γc ∼ 5%. From this rejuvenation effect, we extract a quantitative strain/temperature correspondence between colloidal systems and molecular or spin glass...
متن کاملFluid-mechanical and electrical fluctuation forces in colloids.
Fluctuations in fluid velocity and fluctuations in electric fields may both give rise to forces acting on small particles in colloidal suspensions. Such forces in part determine the thermodynamic stability of the colloid. At the classical statistical thermodynamic level, the fluid velocity and electric field contributions to the forces are comparable in magnitude. When quantum fluctuation effec...
